I have a 1971 18hp Evinrude. I disassembled my lower unit to see why it was popping out of gear and discovered there was some water mixed with the oil. I applied some gasket maker when i put it back together. I checked the clutch dog and forward gear and they both look fine althought there is just a little bit of wear on the two teeth of the clutch dog. I wouldnt think it would be significant enough to cause it to pop out of gear but im new to this whole thing. The forward/neutral/reverse lever is also very very easy to slide. Im afraid it does it to easy but im not sure. Also i found out that my thermostat was bad and i chunked it. Is there any reason why i actually need it? I planned on just running it without the thermostat.

Re: Water in lower unit

It takes surprisingly little wear on the clutch dog and mating surfaces in the forward gear to make it jump out of gear. Most new-be's think it looks fine.

You haven't fixed the water leak yet, so you might as well go back in and do it right.
