Can I run my motor with the out drive off?

Hello All
I have a 87 3.0 Merc
Outdrive is Shot but I would like to tinker with a cold starting problem I have been having. Is there a way to plumb water directly to the engine so I can start it with out drive off, Or is this incredible stupid and impossible to do?

Sure just hook your garden hose up to the thermostat housing where the hose from the outdrive hooks.

Take your garden hose and jam it in the water inlet hose. (you may have to remove it from the inside of the transom mount.) Then put a hose clamp on it so it wont slide out. Should work fine.
