Since it's ZC it should work. The stuff I used was definitely not a "filler" as you only really use a light dusting of the stuff. Maybe that's the difference. I was able to find Duplicolor's etching primer at Pep-Boys for only like $6.

This is a filler primer which provides a thicker coating to cover fine scratches and such. You will need to sand this primer lightly before painting. If you intend to fill some surface imperfections and want a more mirror like finish then use the VHT. If you just want the chemical bonding piece then just use a plain ZC primer.

OOOO duplicolor etching primer is zinc chromate?

Not sure it was ZC but is was chromo-something and it definitely specifically said for bare aluminum so that was good enough for me.

I forget the brand (they were bought out) I used, but when I repainted my Volvo drive, the ZC that was at Boater's World came either in green or yellow.
I bought the yellow. You know, that contrasting color thing.......

It worked great, stayed on better than the actual outdriove paint did.
