Hub Slipping?

I bought a 1965 18HP Johnson last year.
Ran fine on driveway. In lake it runs fine up to about 1/2 throttle.
When I try to go any faster, engines revs and boat stops moving.(prop stops spinning)
What would cause the prop to stop spinning.

Sounds like a spun hub in the prop. Draw a line across the hub with a waterproof magic marker, and run the engine to duplicate the problem. If the line moves, the hub is spun. Hub can be replaced at a prop shop or Johnnyrude dealer can send it out to be fixed. Probably around $40-50.

Re: Hub Slipping?

Lindy, thanks for your reply.
Can this be tested off the boat,
i.e. in 55 gallon barrel,
or in free air just with hose connection to water intake?
Or do I need to test it on boat in lake.
Thanks

lake test, you should never rev an engine up on muffs or in a barrel. if you don't have a waterproof marker, you can scribe a line with a screwdriver or another pointy object.

'Ya know, I used to see drag racers put sheetmetal screws through the edge of wheel rims, into the bead of the tire, so when they did a burnout the rim would not spin inside the tire. Wonder how that concept would work on a prop?
JUST KIDDING!!
