Hopefully somebody out ther can help me.
Have a 1994 force 120 hp outboard on my 18 foot bayliner.
Just installed a new stator assembly, this is the second stator kit installed since I bought the boat new.
Tried to start motor after stator assembly installed and the starter seemed to drag, and engine would not turn over. after about the 4th start attemt I noticed some smoke coming out of the top of the starter.
Had 4 wires to connect on stator assembly, the 2 greens were easy and color coded, but there were two yellows, I tried switching the yellow wires, but samething, no start. I did notice before I changed the stator assembly, the two yellow wire connectors were brownish on voltage regulator side.
Battery is Ok, spark plugs are Ok.
Any ideas ?????????????????????????????????????????
Would like to get this fixed as cheaply as I can so I can take our kids and granddaughter to lake this summer.

Have you tested your rectifier/regulator? I am no expert but I believe that I have read that a bad rectifier/regulator can fry stators. Just a thought.

I would guess the rectifier/regulator may be bad, as evidenced by the brown wires.

I also think you have a separate starting problem. The starter has no connections to the ignition. If the starter won't spin the motor, and especially if it was smoking, you have a starter problem. Could possibly do a cleaning, or a rebuild, but much easier for you to replace the starter.

Double check all the connections on the battery , starter solenoid, and starter first.

Is the starter turning and just not turning the bendix? Your bendix could be faulty or you are low on voltage.... Had that happen to me a while ago. The starter would spin but wouldnt turn the bendix. Turned out to be low on voltage from the battery. Did a jump start from my battery charger and she spun her behind off.
