Mercruiser 120 Thermostat

I have a 1968 Sea Ray SRV 185 with a Mercruiser 120. I removed the thermostat for winterizing, and like a bone head, don't remember the correct position. My memory, and being a automotive mechanic all my life, I think it was installed backwards to how cars and trucks are. Top facing down.
Please help this old broken down mechanic just getting into boating.
Any helpful hints for a new boater with a old classic boat.

The wider bottom is the base, the small tip is at the top. Picture how a pyramid sits.

I understand the thermostst design, but the top of the thermostat is designed toward the radiator, but the boats don't have the same coolant flow, ie: no radiator. The cooling system has a differant flow then I'm used to.
