So i was wondering if anybody had any idea what would cause my 85 horse to start out of the water just fine but once in the water it will only run for a few min. Im thinking it has to do with the coil packs. It'll run but it seems to get flooded after running for a bit possibly from not firing on all cylinders. Is this a common problem? Any advice would be helpful.

Weak ignition components run ok when the engine is cold and tend to fail when the engine heats up to normal operating temps. Check each plugwire for spark with a timing light or a spark checing device after the engine has run long enough to warm up.

Also possible is that the automatic choke has been reconnected or was never disabled.

ok so the coils could be bad then? or would that have to do more with the power pack?

While the individual spark plug coils do fail, they are not considered a high failure rate item. If you find one is not firing, you can always swap it with another coil and see if the problem moves or not. Power packs tend to fail much more frequently. That ignition system also has a stator and a timer base/sensor which can cause problems and are expensive. Best to do some diagnostics on the ignition system first.
