Exhaust Bellows torn?

I am looking at a used boat and the seller mentioned that the exhaust bellows were torn, though the seller says the exhaust just comes around the outdrive instead of the prop. Is it bad to do a sea trial with torn exhaust bellows, will water get into the motor. Is this guy wrong? Also how hard is it to change the exhaust bellows?

...as long as the other 2 bellows are good, there is no problem.

Ayuh,... Go into your negotiations knowing that it needs a Complete Transom service...
ALL new bellows, shift cable etc....

If 1 bellows is torn, ALL of the rubber parts are About to be...

Yup I'm with Bond-o, 99.9% chance boat needs a full transom reseal, figure bout a grand in negotiations on price.

thanks for the suggestion, he also said that the tilt indicator is not working and the brakes on the trailer don't work either >< He is asking $6,500, hrmm...

if your good with your hands even though probably never attempted anything like this before,with all the parts could be done in a morning.allow a couple of hundred dollars if your doing it yourself and change all 3 boots and maybe see if the gimbal bearing is smoothe too.obviously its your first inboard boat so see if the owner is willing to haggle on the price.download yourself a manual and keep up on the maintenance to give your self a good chance of problem free boating.

Not if it is just the exhaust bellows. If the U-joint bellows is cracked and it hasn't been in the water yet, the repair bill will get higher. Gimbal bearing, u-joints, and front seal of drive can get added to the list.

I also wouldn't buy it without doing the sea trial. Before the seller puts it in the water, while the drive is in full trailer tilt mode, have him show you the torn exhaust bellows. The U-joint bellows is right above that and is larger in diameter. Check it carefully for cracks. Its hard to reach in there, but do the best you can, especially checking the inside of some of the folds.

Or just have a professional look at it (survey). If maintenance was lax on bellows & trim gauge, could be in other areas, as well.
