mercruiser charging system

i have a 1988 cobia with a 165 mercruiser that fried the regulator i replaced the regulator and i have the same problem does anyone have any ideas on checking the stator i think it has a dead short i would like to fix it as i want to sell it running perfect:D:D:confused:

Better off putting an aftermarket alternator kit on it.

i would but this has a stator it is internal on the engine on the end of the crank there are no belts

The kit will come with all the brackets,pully and alternator with belt (It,s not cheap)

he is talking about abandonning the stator completely, and adding a regular alternator, instead of repairing what you have. Neither option is cheap, part of the reason that 470 has the reputation it does.
