I need to change the impeller and haven't done it on this one. Any tricks or is it fairly straight forward? Thanks

Re: Johnson Seahorse 6hp impeller

You dont say what year!

Pretty straight forward on my '84 model.

BUT if you have a longshaft take the extension off with the gearcase, clean up the shaft then remove the extension.

Reason , at least with my Yachtwin, is that the shaft runs in a bush in the extension and will not slide out of it until cleaned up.
Brute force pulls the shaft out of the gearcase and the pump. As it comes out the impeller key trashes the pump housing!

While the lower unit is off connect a hose on to the water tube to be sure you can get a good flow. On mine the grommet at the top of the tube is a PITA and blocks the flow.

On different year models (earlier anyway) it may be necessary to disconnect the upper and lower sections of the shift rod after dropping the gearcase a little.

Also good time to think about new seals.
