Hello All,

I have a 86 Malibu Skier with an inboard Mercrusier. The battery terminals overheat. Last season it melted the terminal off of the battery and I was towed back in. Really not sure where to begin trouble shooting.

Thanks for your help in advanced.

Howdy,

Well, since you "melted" the terminals, you should start with replacing the battery and cables with new ones!

Battery terminals usually get hot when they have severe corrosion. That increases the resistance where the terminal connects to the battery. High resistance will cause heat.(actually high current "through" high resistance causes the heat!)

You might also remove the starter and have it checked by an auto-electric re-builder.

Regards,

Rick

Like Rick said NEW cables. The premade ones usually arent gonna last long.
Get somone to make you up a set.Using #2 battery cable, with copper lugs.
Make sure the grounds are secure as that is usually the problem.J

Thanks for everyone reply. Does anyone know how many feet of cable I need?
The boat is located at the lake and it is a 3 hour drive from me, I will not be going up there untill the 3 day weekend and would like to bring the parts with me. I will be hunting down #2 cable and copper connectors.

Thanks again.

I would have 25ft on hand when you go.
