OK so i have seen boats but never had one,so i got one for free.

old wellscraft with a blown 898 , so being young and stupid i bought a used engine . they said it was in a truck and was converted to marine style(manifolds and such i assume) but im confused on ccw and cw.

my old one said ccw on the valve cover but the new one had no valve cover.

which way does a gm truck engine turn cw or ccw.

This is all new to me , did i get the shaft when i bought the truck engine?

i was gonna attempt the engine swap myself but now im wondering what to do.

i read here about changing timing from chain to gears ,so i called the guy i bought it from and he told me it was all stock inside from a truck.

someone please help i have a 1000 dollars into a motor and not sure what to do.

i can see some other numbers on the motor but can really read them, Im gonna pressure wash it tonight and see what i can find,

I guees my biggest concern is the engine rotation, a standard engine i believe turns clockwise but the one in the boat says ccw on a tag on the valve cover.

but im still not sure.

what a great site lots of awesome details and great people here.

keep up the great work helping us beginers

Your truck motor should be a ccw rotation. Sicne you know the motor in the boat is ccw, pull the distributor cap on the new motor and rotate it does the rotor turn the same way as the old one when you turn it the same direction?
As for the timing and cam, it's already got what you need. The truck motor is what Mercruiser uses.

Ayuh,... Standard SBCs are CCW, as viewed from the Flywheel....

Your concerns are Not necessary...

You guys are awesome, I am so relieved now.

you saved me from having to sleep in the dog house.

can any of you snap you fingers and make the motor install itself? LOL:):)

Thanks for the link to the manual john3931 .

Im sure i will be back now that i can start the removal and installation for some technical advice, expecially considering i have never heard of a boat with powersteering.

update.

Got everything swapped over, intake, drains etc, last thing to do was install the drive coupler where the flywheel is and guess what the crank bolt pattern is different. The old motor has a large pattern and the one going in is a small pattern so now what , was gonna use the old crank but the rear seals are completely different size along with the rear half of the block.

anyone ever run into this?

It`s a newer motor, see if your flywheel cover fits the block first . you need the triangular coupler

Ayuh,... It's the Vintages,... You never said what Year any of this is...
Your old motor is a 1986, or Older...
The new motor is 1987, or Later.... It's the 1pc. rear main seal block...

like the title says not a clue.

But atleast im trying.

You guys arent sounding real positive here LOL

The boat i believe is a 1984 i believe the engine going in i believe came from a 1987 chevy truck (was tbi).

So now it looks like i need to get a new flywheel and a new drive coupler (is this correct)

Re: new to boats and not a clue ccw or cw

so we have multiple opinions,

one says triange drive instead of what i have one says new flywheel, drive coupler and starter. but what what ive seen it looks like the triangle drive will fit on a standard gm flex plate with a gm starter or i can just find a motor with a one peice rear seal and get rid of the motor i just put together.
