I have recently just bought my first boat since moving to Jacksonville. I am going to be putting it in the water soon. Where can I get good maps of the waterways, maybe even gas points and marinas and what not? i'd say from jax to about 100 miles in any direction. Thanks!

You can go here and study up on the Florida boating rules, fishing and even hunting rules, I have used it several times when I was planing a trip to Fl.

Charts you can purchase at a lot of different places that sell boating and fishing equipment, in fact the store that supports this great site has paper and gps charts, check here.

There is also an online boating course here that is recognized by the state of Florida.

You can also goto http://activecaptain.com it has NOAA maps as well as satellite maps.

It is free and is also interactive so if you know of a marina or ramp that is not on there you can add it or update it

Too bad it doesn't have USACE maps of inland waterways

novice to the St. Johns you need a map. the river is basically shallow except for the Channel. Stay atleast 300-500 from shore. the docks basically out line the good water.

where are you in Jax?

I've been there before and here's what to expect: Terrible traffic and a bunch of people. Its crowded and very nerve-racking. You may like it, but I didn't. I think crime is kinda high there. Most schools have a lot of students. In FL, houses are usually kinda expensive.

Re: Jacksonville Area

tasha daddy, my plan is to end up trying to be in all the waterways. intercoastal, st johns, the bigger creeks, etc. i plan on living here the rest of my life and really wanna learn these waterways. all this water around us, its pointless not to take advantage of it! back where i'm from (indiana and ohio) we have lakes. most of the rivers are so tiny you cant put a boat in like mine. ohio river yes, but like white river and stuff, only a canoe, and then itll still get stuck sometimes HAHAA

you guys are great with your info, though!

Also take a look at Google Earth. Get an aerial view of where you want to go to and what to expect.
