898 lower shift cable question

I bought a replacement lower shift cable for my 898. The casing is much shorter than the cable itself, probably by 9 inches at least. See pics below. It doesnt seem like it will work, will it require some trimming? Or do I need to look for either a shorter inner cable or longer outer shield?

Re: 898 lower shift cable question

Put the shift slide on the puck end and take a look. It takes up cable slack, but it does look rather long.

I did put the puck on, and I still have at least 6 inches of inner cable left. Not sure why this is, but I did get the cable in the original Mercruiser package. I even mocked the whole deal up and i have a lot of extra cable at the shift plate.
