Will an outboard tach work on my v8?

I have a couple of tachs that were on outboard boats. Trying to hook one up on my chevy but it won't work. Are they incompatable? Why?

incompatibility would be based on 2 cycle combustion and 4 cycle combustion

Outboard tachs take the pulses from the charge coils and is not related to the ignition system. The switch on the back is for the number of coils, 9 12 etc. A tach for an I/O or inboard uses the pulses from the points (ignition system). 4=4cyl 6=6cyl (V or straight) 8=8cyl.
