The shift cable kit includes a small black plastic insert (or ferrule) part #14705.

I can't find any reference in the manual to show where this part is supposed to go. Any ideas? Thanks.

It's for where the cable passes through the transom assembly.

Mine's an '86 Alpha One. There doesn't look as if there's a place for it. Where the cable goes through the transom there's already what looks like a built-in ferrule.

The catalog says it's for newer Mercruisers. Maybe it's not required on mine but I wish they'd make it clear.

last year i replace a shift cable in an 86' with alpha 1 gen 1 and i used this black part you are talking about. maybe your old one did not come out. i know mine was a pain to install only because there was no room to get my hand.
