NO! The 1961 has the small crankshaft.

There was no 35hp in 1961. The last 35hp was 1958. But it did have the small crankshaft, so maybe-possibly. I would have to do some research to be 100% sure in this case.

BTW, Chinewalker is a good and knowledgeable man. He just made a mistake. Actually, the reason the crankshaft size was changed was because they were breaking. Therefor, it is possible that the 1961 COULD have a large crankshaft, if it had broken and if the powerhead has been replaced. That would make Chinewalker the winner in the debate.

You can tell which shaft you have by the flywheel nut size. The small crank has a 7/8" nut (wrench size), and the large crank has a 1-1/16" nut.

Frank - I was under the impression that 1961 was the changeover year due to the cranks breaking in 1960 model year. Was it all '61s, half, or none that got the small crank??

Re: Fly wheel compatibility help?

Good question. All I have is the quick reference book that says:
580334 fits 1960-61 (w/o ring gear)
580335 fits 1960-61 (w/ ring gear)
580410 fits 1962-up (w/o ring gear)

Did some 1961's get the new crank?? I dont know. Possibly. I do know that some powerheads got warrantied.

Re: Fly wheel compatibility help?

The 1963 crank was larger ar the flywheel hub , so the fyywheel of a 63 will not fit a 61 hub. I don't really remember whe this change took place. seem 's it was mid-year, but not sure.

Re: Fly wheel compatibility help?

so if i got this right then it means that there was no 35hp in 61 so I must be wrong about the year.and that the 1963 40hp has a larger crank shaft (so that fly wheel wont work) than the 61. i can also verify that two numbers that 580334 and 335 are in the part catalog as the compable fly wheels. right?

Re: Fly wheel compatibility help?

Right. The only unanswered question is whether or not you might have a '61 with a big crank. Measure the nut and you will know.

the nut on top was like a 1 in socket to remove i think i will double check. pretty sure though cause i had a standard one inch ajustable rench on it at first. but i will go check in just a little bit.

ok so with a tape measure i measured the top nut from outer edge of nut to the other outer edge the nut is 7/8 of an inch. so from one side to opposing side, exactly 7/8in.
