Fired up the old Johnson today after a winter resurrection for a little bucket cruising. Water pump, lower seals, head gasket, ignition, and carb rebuild. Started on the 3rd pull after not running for 15+ years. A little needle valve adjustment and it was purring like a kitten. What a sweet little motor, off to the lake on Friday for a sea trial.

Was nice to see the nearly 60 yr old come back to life and a fun project.

That motor is no where near 60 years old. I say so because, darn it, I was born in 54. Is there any chance you could post a picture of it? One of my bucket list ideas is to get a 54 and restore it. Glad to hear some things from 54 are still running like a top. Best of luck. Rick.

I'll get some pictures during the lake trial on Friday. It's nothing too pretty to look at, didn't repaint it. Still might do that next winter, but for this year it has some trolling to do.

Rick, you are correct, not so close to 60 yet. It definitely seems to have plenty more life in it to get the job done.

Maybe it's just me, but can't help but feel like that inanimate hunk of aluminum is much happier now that's it's back on the job. Must have watched too many Disney movies. :)

BTW, many thanks to wbeaton for parts manual help. :)

2010 minus 1954 equals 56 years old...barely old enough to be getting gray around the prop. Good work and nice story about bringing it back to life...got any pix to post?

Great old motors. If properly tuned up, they run like champs and start easy.:cool:

Here it is on the back of the boat. Worked pretty well on the lake, pushes the boat at trolling speeds easily. (18' Wellcraft CC)

Cool old motor, I have a '55 that I am working on, still missing some components, but I will find them sooner or later
