Hello,
I'm new here and this is my first post.
I bought a 1990 Miriah 1850XL with a 4.3 Merc Alpha 1.
The engine has been diagnosed with a bad rod bearing.

My plan is to order a remanf long block and swap it out.

Do I need to remove the outdrive in order to pull the engine?
Any other tips or tricks to removing the engine?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tim - welcome aboard! :D

As Bond-o mentions, you pull the outdrive first. It is an easy thing to do.

One "tip" is to go ahead and buy the alignment tool. If you do any of your own work, you will need it. When you reinstall the engine it needs to be aligned - and you need the tool to do that. Look on ebay - they are on there all the time for not too much money. Good luck!

Re: Removing 4.3 Merc

Thanks guys.

Can someone tell me where the casting number is on the 4.3 block?
I found the GM logo and "4.3l" on the rear port side but no numbers that correspond to any of the casting ID numbers.

Its kind of tight in the back of the engine bay, so knowing where to look would be best.

Thanks,
Tim
