New Poppet leaking thru weep hole?

I have just purchased a 1988 Wellcraft with twin Mercury 150 Black Max's. I have an over heating issue with the left engine and after reading some of these post on the forum I decided to take a look at the poppet, The diaphragm itself and the gaskets were worn but nothing I think that would be detrimental to its process. I did replace with a poppet kit from quick silver and now at idle it will drip about 4-5 drop a minute out of the weep hole and when I take it up a little over 1000rpm it starts to stream and seems to get even stronger with every advance in on the throttle. I took it back apart and didn't recognize any issues from me installing it. Just to check myself though when in installed the poppet it seems to press against the diaphragm opening that little passage between "Circles" and I double checked to make sure that the poppet itself seated into the rubber seat in the block. Any ideas of why it would be leaking like this any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

I suspect that you 'inverted the center' plate, do you have the Merc service manual which should show you the correct order and orientation of the parts?

You can check part exploded views at

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectModels3.asp?type_id=MAR

You must have your serial #, but the view may not be clear enough to see that the small groove between the 'circles' should be on the engine side, not on the outer cover side.

Ok, it took me longer to get to that poppet but non the less, I did check the seating of the poppet valve itself and it was seating fine I did however have to re-tap and place inserts into the block due to the old bolts being so corroded the threading was worn out causing the poppet plate not to seat well. Unfortunately that did not fix my over heating problem I will be replacing my head gaskets and changing the water pump with impeller kit and new thermostats and flushing my system with water hose from the bottom to try and clear any debris. Again thanks for the advice.
