I'm replacing the water pump on my 1993 Johnson 90 HP, OEM kit and manual in hand. The kit includes the grommet for the shift rod but no reference in the instructions on installation procedure. Does it just "float" at the bottom of the shift rod or is an adhesive used to fasten it to the shifter cover? I am a fan of the factory manual but it is not always complete and not always right. This is the engine you remove the clip to remove the rod and the manual says "shift to reverse". You absolutely can't be in reverse to do this. It has to be neutral or forward.
