hey guys i recently bought a 1981 imperial v182 with a 470. the last person i think smacked the starter with a hammer and broke the end cap on it. i was wondering if that starter was the same as any kind of automotive starter. looks like it could be a ford type. it has a seperate solenoid. i really dont want to pay for a new one at the boat store.

No, they are not. DO NOT use automotive starters, alternators, distributors, carburators, fuel pumps, and the list goes on, on a boat. They are dangerous, can leak fuel into the bilge and create sparks to light that fuel.

Buy a used or rebuilt one, there are plenty of marine salvage yards around that will sell you a starter, as well as many places online. Using a car starter is a huge mistake..
