6 hp shifting problem

I have a problem keeping the forward gear locked in. it does no t go all the way in gear going forward. I took apart the gear case and the only problem I could find is the forward gear bearing is warn . Could this cause this condition or what is it/

The positive click stops for the shifting lever is by a Ell shaped bent spring that snaps into notches on the shifting rod inside the lower unit. This spring & a helper spring are screwed into the lower unit above the prop shaft & mate into notches in the shifting rod. If your motor's stops are non-functioning, the spring & helper cvan be there & OK, just that they had gotten slid forward enough to not engage into the rod's notches. So it is just a simple matter dropping the bottom 1/2 of the gearcase & of realigning them & retightening the screw. Then reassemble the gearcase.

The "only" problem you could find is a worn forward gear bearing?? That allows the gear to move away from the detented postion of the dog. Not only that, it causes severe and catastrophic wear of the gear teeth. Just how worn is that bearing anyhow?
