Hi all
While taking out the manual starter assembly on my 1989 15hp Evinrude the spring started to uncoil. I stopped it from coming out all together, but it looks like it will be a bear to get back in. The reason I was working on this is because the end of the spring is continually coming out of the slot in the cup holder. If I buy a new spring is the Sierra brand any good, its alot cheaper. I just dont want to buy one that isnt fully coiled and wont fit easily into the cup holder. I am not sure why the spring is coming unhooked all the time.I have made sure the slot in the holder is ok,as well as the end of the spring. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks Phil

Re: starter spring

The spring coming loose from the cup is not usually the fault of the spring..... most likely it is something is wrong with the cup.

Installing the spring is simply a matter of having the starter off the engine and on the work bench, then coiling it by hand and inserting it into the cup.

(Manual Starter Cord Installation)
(This pertains to the type of Manual Starters such as the later 9.9hp and 15hp models)
(J. Reeves)

The starter assy must be off and on the bench to do that. Split the pulley by removing the retaining screws that retain the pulley halves. Install the rope, kinking it slightly so that it doesn't come undone. Reassemble and re-install the starter.

Now, looking straight down at the starter, turn the pulley a turn or two in a counter clockwise direction to exert a pressure on the spring. Then, while holding the starter in that position, unkink the cord and thread it out the starter cord passageway.

Pull the rope all the way out to make sure that it extends all the way (and retracts). While it's pulled out, tie a slip knot in it so that it doesn't accidently get away from you and slam back in. Install the handle, release that slip knot... that's it.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:
