Hello, I'm new to the forum here, but have some questions regarding a replacement motor I just purchased.
I recently bought a 17'6" Fish and Ski. The motor was an '88 Mariner 115 IL6.
Motor was running a little rough and had trouble idling. Treated fuel and was
trying to clean carbs running it. Looks like oil injection system failed...subsequently I blew my engine. This was very discouraging when I found out it would be too costly to rebuild, the parts were very difficult to find, and was would just be too time consuming overall.
After searching for several weeks I've just purchased a 1990 Evinrude 150 xp to replace it.Compression test results were as below:
90psi on one cylinder, 100 on 4 cylinders, and 95 on the other cylinder.
My mechanic and I were able to get the engine started, but found it had a whole in (what looks like a cheap) fuel filter made of glass and metal. ??
I have it at my mechanics house now. He's replacing lower unit intake screens, changing gear oil, and putting in new fuel filter and fuel line in. He said we will bypass the oil injection system on it and mix gas/oil. Below I have a few questions I was hoping someone may comment on.
1. Any recommendation on replacement plugs?
2. Any other preventative measures I can take before running and testing it on the lake.
3. My boat is rated for a 150hp, but I've read this engine can produce closer to 165hp. Can anyone comment or confirm that? Worries me a little - although my transom is in excellent condition - just worried it may be too much motor.
4. I would like to paint the exterior motor and cowling black to match boat (it is currently like a navy blue). Any painting suggestions? Can I get decal replacements?
Any and all other suggestions would sure be appreciated as I've already learned one expensive lesson the hard way.
Also, please feel free to add any opinions on the engine in general. Apologies for the length of this post.
Thanks a ton!
