Hello All,

I've got a stripped throttle gear in the handle of my 1985 9.9.

I have found the part at Crowley Marine, it is part #66 (although the diagram only shows one gear, I believe both parts of the gear to be stripped). Here is the link:

I can't figure out how to remove the existing stripped gear and shaft.

Thanks for the help.

Don't take this wrong but you need an OMC service manual for your specific engine. It will help you with all the repairs you need to do. Which gear set are we speaking about there. Is it #66 and #81 or is it # 52 and #109? Let us know and we can help. You should be able to see if either 66 and 81 are buggered. Best of luck. Rick.

Edit. On second read I see you did already say it was #66. Sorry about that. Have a look at this site and see if your gear is actually broken. They do have a missing tooth look to them and that is normal. There is a corresponding spot on the other gear that melds with each other. It is not uncommon for those gears to be out of alignment though. Have a look at this site and let us know if you need more assistance. To get 66 apart you start by removing screw #62 and remove in order all the parts up to and including #66.

Edit#2. Now that I look, I don't see that fantastic picture of the two gears in Leeroy's site anymore. Take a good look at the two on your engine and you will see how they are supposed to go together. The link will give you lot's of great info. on your motor anyway.
