What type of lube for a lower unit service

What grade/type/viscocity oil or lube do I need to perform a lower unit service on a 98 Johnson 40 hp?

80-90 lower unit oil. it has an additive to fight water. any brand will do. i use walmart's Super Tech.

I like to use a synthetic Marine Gear Oil on those newer motors (post 1995 or so). I also think you will find OMC recommends the synthetic.

Regular gear oil is fine for the older motors.

OMC, BRP, Johnson, or Evinrude does not make a synthetic lower unit oil. They recommend their HPF-Pro or HPF-XR gear oil, except for the old electric shift motors.
