Hey guy's,

I just picked up a vintage 7.5 hp 4 stroke Honda, early 80's year. The motor has been well cared for and believe it or not, looks practically new. Starts well and idles sort of OK but does not take load very well. I suspect that the timing is off a bit and am not sure how to set up the pulleys for correct timing before putting the belt on. Any ideas for this new boater?

there should be a mark on each pulley that looks like an arrow, point them towards eachother and you should be good.

You may want to clean the carb 1st. Cogged belts usually don't jump time.

Timeing is easy on these units but do'es require some diligence. If you look carefully at the cam pulley you will see a dimple that denotes tdc for the cam at #1 you will also see an identical dimple stamped into the cylinder head.Alighn those two dimples and the t mark on the flywheel should be pointing at the rear starter flang. These should all align at the same time.Timeing problems with these units are rare however mud dawbers seem to love the cozy comfort under that cover and that can create some problems
