Rookie Rattle Can Paint Question?Applying the clear coat?

I painted my outboard cowling and I had a nice orange peel effect. I have sanded the paint with a 1000 grit paper and finished it off with 2000 grit. The orange peel is gone but so is the shine.

Outside of cleaning it well, Do I need to do anything else prior to spraying on a few layers of the clear coat? I am looking for a shiny finish. Will the clear coat bring out the finish even though it is very dull now? Thanks for the help.

Ayuh,... Polishing,+ Wax will bring a Shine to what you have Now...

I would think the clear coat would want a 320# or so finish, before shooting,...
Even Clear needs alittle tooth to grab...
2000# might be Too fine...

Donno...

Great, that is helpful. Thank you. I will rough it up prior to spraying on the clear.

Clear can give you orange peel as well although it does tend to level out a little more I have found. Really a good polishing is what you want to bring back the shine after wet sanding.

Or some of the shine at any rate...I prefer only a slight gloss to cut down on glare when on the water.
