Hello:
We are changing a broken motor for an used one that runs great. The one on the boat is a Johnson 150 J150plees.

What do we do to get the steering cables off of the boat? We do have an OEM for the motor but we tried this last summer and could not get it done even with the book. Something seemed stuck. So anything anyone can offer would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nate

I found the best way to this is just leave them in and cut the ends off, most of the time when they run the cables they run the wiring harness with it and tie them together.

The engine has to come off the transom, you need an engine hoist ( cherry picker), rent one or buy one off craigslist, usually around $125.
There isn't enough clearance to pull it all the way out without shifting the engine and the safe way is the hoist.
