I was hooking up the control cables and the distance between the slot in the cable end to where it clips to the motor is about 3/4 of an inch to short even turned out almost all of the way, the other cable is fine. In the swivel clamp with the 1 screw I have it tightened up on the rear of the cable metal, it that ok to do/ do they make any type of an extention part for this problem? thanks for any help on this subject.

Difficult to diagnose because you don't say which cable it is. However, throttle cables and shift cables each have a different termination. If you have two short ends for shift, then yes, the throttle cable will be about an inch too short. The cable itself has a groove which sits into the swivel clamp and this positively locates it. Do no clamp it anywhere else.

thanks Frank, one does have a larger barrel on it than the other. This would be the shift cable that I am having problems with. It could fit the groove but then it wouldn't be dead centered with the neutral safety switch button when it was in neutral. Thanks for any more input.

Are you sure that they are clipped to the correct ball ends? Upper ball is shift and lower (about an inch further back) is throttle.

The long end attaches to throttle cable and the short one to shift cable

And, you are aware that the shift neutral interlock switch activating cam is adjustable by loosening the two screws on the lever and sliding it. It should be somewhere close to center though.

should one of the cables look different? One has a larger barrel than the other. both are grey yamaha cables, same length. thanks

both cables should be exactly the same. The ends that screw on are different. One is about an inch long and the other usually is about two inches with a larger diameter. the larger one is the throttle connection.
