well heres the story. Last year i was given a boat by a buddy. It sank at his dock and he said if i got it out of there then I could have it, needless to say its now sitting in my backyard. Well after doing a little work to it, I got it running and decided it was time for the boat to go. Today I met a guy at the lake to take him for a ride, thinking it was a done deal. When I put it in the water it fired up just fine as usual, but it wouldnt go forwards or backwards. The engine would throttle up but I couldnt go anywhere. Yes the water was very cold as I swam the boat back to the boat ramp! Any thoughts on what would make this happen? It ran like a dream before I put it up for the winter. Its a 305v8 volvo penta on a 96 seaswirl 201 lx.

Did you check that the cable is moving? I would remove the rear cover on the drive. You should see the shift linkage level in neutral and when you shift it it should be tilted and you won't be able to spin the prop one way.
