The last time I had my boat out (November) I ran into a problem with my OMC 250 Sterndrive. The first hour on the water everything worked perfectly. When I got ready to leave the cove where we were fishing, the engine (5.8 Ford) ran fine untill I tried to engage the sterndrive and then it would stall. Every time I started the engine and tried to engage the drive the same thing would happen. How should I go about troubleshooting this problem? What should I check first?

Not sure what an OMC 250 is. How about a year?

It is a OMC 250 Sterndrive on a 21' 1979 Century 4000 Cuddy Cabin with a Ford (5.8L) 351W engine.

So it is a 5.8 with a Stringer drive i take it.
Did those have any type of shift interupt switch?

I don't work on Stringers...

It is the out drive used pre 1986 on OMC power.

Usually painted white with the tilt gear on the gear housing.

And a big rubber boot that you never want to let get bad. (you will sink).

Does your control box have a idle up button? One you can pull for throttle only. Then you have to push it in to engage the outdrive shift.

Look on top of the back of your engine and see a flat box with a cable attached.

Have someone shift f to r and watch for movement there. if yes it's in your drive. :(
