I have a 3400 pound boat and about a 1250 pound four wheeled trailer.

Rims are 13"

What would you recommend for the size tires for this unit?

Re: Tires

As far as I know, there is no 13" tire that has a load rating over around 1700 lbs. You should go up to 14".

I agree, also check the brand of tire your buying. I just bought a new set of tires, and before I did, I done some checking on a survey of tires and got a set of cooper brand tires radial, and love them, and the price. Also,American made:D

Bruce,... He's at 3650lbs. with a tandem trailer...
4x 1000lbs each is well above his load...
4x 1700lbs each is Way over the necessary rating...

Re: Tires

You said you have a 250 pound four wheel trailer. Did you really mean you have a trailer that weighs 2500 pounds and is a tandem axle unit? I can't believe you have tandem trailer that weighs 250 pounds nor is it likely that the trailer weighs 2500 pounds. So what is it you really have? What we do know is that you have four wheels to support the load. Look at any of the tire size charts on the web. Start with 13 inch tires and find the load rating for load range B, C, and D. Multiply one tires load capacity by 4 (four tires) to get the maximum load they can carry. Now add up the weight of the boat, motor, gas, gear, batteries, beer/soda, fishing tackle, etc AND the actual weight of the trailer (not the GVW). If the number is more than the maximum for the 13 inch load range you picked, go to the next load range. If that's still not enough, go to the next. You may end up with 14 inch tires. In any case, you cannot exceed the GVW for trailer.

Missed the part about the tandem trailer. "4 wheeled trailer" made me miss it.

Here are some pictures. Keep in mind the boat is in restoration. Looks like crap now but later this summer will be the gem of the Great Lakes.

Re: Tires

That trailer alone weighs over 1000lbs. Where did you come up with 250? I saw this cute little tandem axle trailer with 12" wheels posted right here on the forum.

Re: Tires

At least that much. You might want to pull a hub and check the spindle size. If that trailer has a straight spindle (1-1/16 inch bearings inner and outer) you have another issue as capable tires are no good if you do not have capable axles. The axles must have as a minimum, 1-1/16 inch outer bearings and 1-3/8 inner. Those would be 3500 pound axles giving potential for 7000# with proper springs. Load capacity is only as good as the weakest link in system (tires, springs, and axles). The boat probably has a 30 - 40 gallon fuel tank. Gas weighs 8 pounds/gallon so that alone can add over 300 pounds.

Re: Tires

Hi Bob,

A ST175/80R13 C range has a capacity of 1360 lbs x 4 = 5440 lbs, may be very close to your maximum. ST185/80R13 load range c are 1480Lbs to a max of 5920lbs, probably a better fit for your needs, but as stated you must determine your total gross weight first.

Re: Tires

your axles look ok but towing that pig around with that 1200lb trailer you might want to put 15in tires on her 14s will be at the max, anytime you put tires on a rig you want to go 1.5 half again what you are towing limit, when a trailer goes over a bump your weight quadruples when the boat and trailer come back down your springs take up some of this but not all so you want some extra weight handling to comp for that extra weigh, all I can say is all it takes is one time for you to have a blowout doing 50 down the road and feel that boat start to swipe from side to side to make you get good tires, its really better to never feel that, it tends to leave bad stains in your shorts

Re: Tires

The trailer takes a four bolt wheel. I don't want the expense of changing axles. I'm not able to find four bolt wheels in 14 or 15 inch rims. Do you know of such a site?

Re: Tires

There are tires on the port side, P 180 /80 13 R. I think. Well they are passenger tires of course. I had to use some spare tires to get it home when I bought it. It had been setting in a junk yard for 5 or 6 years. I was concerned about the engine of course. But when I got it home I checked the oil and it was brand new. I cleaned the carb and it started right up and purrs like a kitten. A fellow was restoring it when he died. I think he rebuilt the engine then was in the process of painting it when he died. His widow called the junk yard and told them to come and get the boat. Two tires on the left side blew out and the driver just kept rolling on the rims. I purchased it for 250.00. All the decking was rotted out and the junk yard squirrels had about 10 bushels of walnuts stored in the bilge. I replaced the wooden decking and rewired it. The tires are going to cost more than the boat originally cost.
