After finding a burned connecting rod bearing I am replacing the powerhead on my Johnson J6RCDE (1986 6HP) with one from a J8RCDE (1986 8HP) . From looking at the parts diagrams it appears the only differences are the intake manifold, & carb., the leaf plate, the power pack and what is referred to as the magneto retainer & link assy.(6HP p/n 0395883, 8HP p/n 0395937) to which the magneto plate attaches. The retainer & link assy. is the only 8HP part that I do not have. My questions are, what is the difference between the two parts and can the 6HP retainer & link assy. be used with the 8HP parts or should I reuse all the 6HP parts. Thanks for any help you can give.
