89 Alpha 1 compatible with older lower unit?

Hello everyone,

I have a 1989 3.7LX with a Alpha 1. Last year while trolling with an uncle his wire line got wrapped around the prop shaft and slightly grooved the shaft enough that new seals weep oil.

I spoke to a friend who has an older Alpha R outdrive in storage and offered it to me for free if it will fit. (It has the eye loop on the top cover of the upper housing). I know there are some differences in the two lower units like the lower water pump housing and preload pin on the top of Alpha R driveshaft. Will the pre load pin on the "R" lower work with the newer Alpha 1 upper unit? I want to use the Alpha R lower unit on my Alpha 1 upper unit.

Ayuh,... You can install your Bud's lower onto your Upper,... Yes...

The Whole drive will swap also, but then the gear ratio has to be the same...

Thanks for the quick reply, appreciate the knowledge! Going to order a new water pump for the Alpha R and was thinking of stamping the outside housing for future reference maybe near the drain plug.
