I am working on a 1987 70hp evinrude model e70tlcu. I have had problem with engine stalling when just placed in gear at low rpm's. It will idle fine and runs fine at top end but only runs about thirty seconds or less when just engaged in gear. Then, to start it I have to choke it. But starts fine. All 3 carbs were spitting so I rebuilt all 3 and changed the reed plates. High speed jet and idle air bleed orifice correct per manual. Bottom 2 carbs don't spit anymore but the top still does. Alot! Reed plate looks fine. Changed plugs and wires. Still had problem. Started testing elctrical. Found bad stator and rectifier was starting to ooze. Replaced both. Checked compression. 90 psi on all three. Then checked timing. It was severely retarded. When I adjust timing correctly to 4 atdc deg it idles way to fast with all 3 throttle plates fully closed and in sync.
I think if I get the correct timing it won't stall when just placed in gear. But it idles way to fast at the correct timing and there isn't any adjustments. So here I am. What could I try next? Note- after stator installed all tests done on the muffs. idles extremely high.
I have the exact same problem as in these two threads-I replaced the reeds with original oem stainless steel. could they be too stiff?
