97' 225 carb wont run in Gear.

Hello all, trying to help a buddy on his 97 225 (carb) saltwater series. In neutral the engine starts up fine but when you put it in gear it will run as long as you dont advance the throttle more than 2000 rpm it start coughing and then then quits. But if you leave it in Neutral you are able to advance the throttle up to 5000 rpm no problem. Were are scatching our heads now!!!!

You need to be a little more specificbut first check the basics.Pull the drain plugs on the carbs and check for water,your idle jets sit higher so will run at low rpm if there is water in the bottom of the bowl.Next check your fuel supply is OK.Merc fuel pumps need re kitting every few years,about $11.00 here in Aus.If these items are OK then a full carb strip and clean would be the next step.
