Prop stays engaged in forward no matter what I do. I removed the cables and can manually move the linkage forward and back wit hno problem but it has no effect on the driveline. (Stays in Forward) Should I remove the lower unit to check the linkage ? Is it hard to remove the lower unit ?

Thanks !

Yes that would be the next step.
Do you have a service manual for the motor? it should give you the steps needed to remove lower unit. It should not be hard to do.
Just remove bolts, but I do not know how the 96 30 shift linkage is attached. some have to be disconnected and other motors just slip out.

1989 30HP (ELP) Won't Shift

I had the year wrong in my original post, it's actually a 1989 (Not 1996) if that makes a differance ? Can anyone recomend the best place to get a manual ? I notice some people on EBAY are selling the CD versions for less than $10. Are these any good ?

Dont know but $10 bucks is cheap and you probably wont miss it. Ask them if it is the yamaha factory service manual or what.
