mercury 50 2 stroke tachometer

hi, i just bought a 2007 sylvan 16' with a 50 hp 2 stroke (also 2007) merc outboard. i started it in the driveway and the tach is not reading. its a faria ,the lights work on it when i turn on the running lights but the needle doesnt move . i looked under the dash and theres 4 wires coming from the back of it that run to a harness and it all looks to be in good shape. the boat is clean as is the motor . i looked on the motor and all wires look new and are connected. any ideas? im completely lost, first boat ever. thanks
