1991 Evinrude 15 hp, hit a rock in the river and broke the skeg off just below the gear housing. Can I have a new piece of the proper metal welded on to form a new skeg? What type of metal is it? What type of welding should be used? Will welding damage anything in the lower gear housing? I had a new river runner prop and skeg guard on order at the time I did this..... I know I shoulda waited till I got it to try out the motor. But I was excited!:)

its aluminum take the bottom half of the gearcase off before you weld just in case if it does do any damage.

Get someone who's a TIG welder and has done this before. Most times, unnecessary to do any dis-assembly. It's a quick=, easy job for someone with experience.

its a good idea to keep the oil in the gearcase to absorb the heat,I have a great welder here in the Fl.Keys(coral rock snaps em alot)that is his advice. If you hit your prop ,be SURE to check your prop shaft is still strait
