while in line today to go out on the lake, noticed alot of boaters starting their outboards for probably a minuteor so. guessing to insure it will start and to warm it up. is this safe for the motor?

Starting an outboard out of water is real tough on the water pump. Don't do it.

Start it at home with the muffs on it before heading to the lake.

Boat mechanics around the country love for guys to do that on the ramp!
If you haven't seen how a rubber water pump impeller is squished into the impeller housing on one side, you should take a look. Then you'd see why it's a miracle it EVER lasts even a minute when being run out of water without melting. The impeller needs the water for lubrication badly.

Like the others said...it WILL damage the impeller! Again, give it a quick start at home if your in doubt of its starting reliability. I've seen people tow their boat to the lake only to have starting problems and a not-so-good battery to make things worse....makes for a bad boating experience...

Perfectly safe for the motor as long as it's only run for a brief time. The waterpump impeller however will be toast in a brief time. Goes to show how many people are not aware of how to properly look after their motors :(.
