I have a 5.0 L Merc EFI engine. I took of the plastic flame arrestor cover off for the 1st time today and notice that there was one air hose hooked to a rear fitting on the side of the arrestor, one hose hooked to the bottom of the arrestor, and then there is a 3rd fitting on the side of the arrestor at about the 5 o'clock position without any hose hooked to it. Is this normal or am I missing something that should be hooked to it.

Lots of different kinds of 5.0L Merc EFI engines out there, do you have a serial number or even a year may help a little bit, to determine which setup you really have.

Myself i dont work much on the EFI engines so i couldnt say 4 sure.

But you may get your serial number year ,make etc posted as one of the guys will probably want it to look up the correct manual to verify your question.

I believe if you look in service manual #24 page 5E-19 Vacuum and vent hose routing. It may help you out a little bit, If not then it might help us out better if you could post a few good photos of what your looking at.:)

Here are some pictures. I have one fitting on the side of the flame arrestor with nothing attached to which I have a concern with. Is this normal for a 1999 5.0L Fuel injected?

If you do not have another black conduit style hose coming out of the other side valve cover then from my memory that is normal to only have one hose going to the flame arrestor like that, Because the port side valve cover hose should have a harder black hose coming out of it, And I believe it's going to the center of the throttle body it's self and it should have the pcv valve hooked to it at the valve cover side. Is that what you see?

(FYI) The sensor on the flame arrestor is your intake air temperature.:)

You have throttle body injection TBI, look at the hose routing on page 5E-68 of the #24 manual.

Don,

Can you confirm the page. My #24 manual only goes to 5E 42.

I have the digital copy. I downloaded again # 24 and still only goes to page 42. Here are the table of contents.

Sorry to be a pain.

Go to the page 5E-68, not the index. That would be page 557 of 895 in acrobat.

Re: Newbie question - Flame arrestor

Ah got it thanks. My old manual did not have that many pages. The one one did.
Mine is laid out as the book shows but I have the extra unused port on the flame arrestor.

Any ideas?

Re: Newbie question - Flame arrestor

I believe that extra port would normally have the clear hose from the mechanical fuel pump.
