Teleflex Big-T helm

What a beautiful morning here in Eastern Central Florida.........and my 19' Sportcraft is not ready to go fishing with me!<br /><br />Few day ago I have (stupid me) broken the small gear inside the helm trying to steer a very stiff engine steering arm. After fixing the problem with the steering arm, which suppose to take care before braking the helm (don't we all learn the hard way?), I found out how expensive a new Big-T helm is. Therefore I have decided to repair the defective one myself. The only damaged part is the small gear inside the box. Now the fun starts, because everywhere I have phoned and asked for this part was told the factory does not sale parts for the helm anymore due to safety issues . Honestly, and with all respect to all issues, founded or not, this gear box is very simple and does not inflict any more safety issues than replacing the breaks on my truck. Could anyone advice please where could I buy the small gear for the Big-T helm, new or used.<br /><br />With anticipated thanks and best regards to all members,<br />Joker

Sorry to say I have the same problem. Trying to get any information out of Teleflex is imposible. When I asked them if thay had changed the gear assembly design since they switched from a bolted to a riveted shaft, they actually told me that they wouldn't tell me. I figured since the one cable in my boat, a catamaran, runs continously from the rudder on one hull to the helm and back to the rudder on the other hull it would be easier to buy a new helm unit and canablize the gears. I would have to do this because the newer one's with the riveted shafts don't separate to allow me to put the middle of the cable into the helm assembly. Replacing this cable would be a monumental and expensive task, besides they work just fine. IF ANY ONE OUT THERE KNOWS IF THE GEARS IN THE MODELS FROM THE EARLY 1980'S ARE THE SAME AS THE GEARS IN THE UNITS YOU CAN BUY NOW ARE THE SAME OR DIFFERENT, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
