I have a 1985 Merc 181. I have all the parts removed in order to pull the head; however, I cannot separate the exhaust manifold from the head. I've been using a hammer and big flathead screwdriver. Am I being too wimpy? I just wanted to check with someone before I started with the chisel and sledge. Whats the best way to separate these two items?

Thanks, Neil.

Yes, the 181cid is the Merc 140hp. I have attached a picture.
I have removed the three bolts; loosened the two studs. The throttle link and carb link are short bolts and don't go though to the head.
Do I need to remove the two studs or does it slide over the studs?
What is the best way to remove the studs?
What other bolts could there be? I don't see any others.

Thanks for your help.
Neil.

It is probably seized on the studs, normaly you dont have to remove them as these function as supports when mounting back the (heavy) manifold and gasket.

yea from the pic it looks like (crustation adhesion) is at work on the manifold and studs ....:D

may need to warm them up ,or try giving them a good soaking .

If it is seized on the studs; what is the best way to break it loose?

Thanks,
Neil.

Thanks for your help.
Neil.

Run 2 nuts all the way on the threads then use 2 wrench's to tighten the 2 nuts together, very tight. Use one of your wrench's to turn the in side nut counter clock wise.
