starter jamming

starter motor jams violently, just had the brushes replaced and have found more fun issues!! all contacts are clean, new relay, cranks instantly but in a bad way.. any ideas fellas?? love a brainstorm but this ones been over a month now!! Appreciate any assistance..

Yes year and engine would be a good start , also pull the starter and bench test it off the boat and see if it acts the same way .
