i have an 84 3 cyl 65 hp johnson outboard and i wanted to change the gear oil in the lower unit. i've had the boat for two years and really havent done much to it as the person i bought it from did regular maintenance. i did unscrew the bleeder on the bottom of unit and noticed small shavings which i read is normal and there was no milky fluid just gear oil. my question is how much gear oil is in the unit and do i put the new oil in the same way it comes out and how much do i put in. never worked on boat motors before but i think i should be able to handle this as its not rocket science right!

Re: maintenance???

When you refill the gearcase it should be in the running positon with the two large slotted (vent & fill) plugs removed.

Force the oil in from the bottom until it runs out the top, then close the top first.

22 ounces capacity.
