I have a 16ft 1979 Starcraft SS. The stock Steering wheel has two small red and black wires coming out from behind the housing. What are these for? There is no horn that I know of on this boat.

They have historically been hot I believe. I am redoing some of the wiring under the dash as some of it has been corroded. They are very small gauage. One Red, One Black coming out of the small steel box behind the wheel.

I have a 1975 Starcraft and rewired it conpletely. No wires from the steering wheel were on mine. Really not a good place for them as there were no wheel mounted horns that I know of. Good location for a shorted wire to happen and you know what that can cause. Put a meter across them and see if there connected to ground ,if they are and not hot ,which I doubt, I would remove them. You can always find another wire to connect to if you cut one off I ran all my hot leads from a mounted fuse center and a single large wire to it ( Plus) for power-and a common ground. All of the interior wire is fed from the one source and all the fuses easy to reach and marked..

Marc, I don't know what type of motor you have, or if it has tilt/trim. After saying that, my guess would be the trim switch that some people mount on the steering wheel so they can adjust trim without taking their hand off the wheel. Some are factory but most are aftermarket. Thats just my guess. Dale

Welcome to iboats marcus, and the starcraft club(once you post some photos of your rig of course).

I have the same boat and I have no wires at all coming from the steering wheel. I think Dale might be right with the idea of it being tilt/trim controls.

You should start another thread and post some pics, I'd love to see another 16' '79 SS. Mine's yellow what color is yours?

Thanks for the picture. Those wires are for your fish finder or compass.(SP)
The black (negative) is not correct. Previous owner wired it like it was a car.
The ground should go to an isolated common ground block.
The red (positive) power wire to a switch than the fuse panel.
If you don?t have a switch than straight to the fuse panel.
Easy fix.
Nice boat.
