Replacing Piston

I have a 2000 Johnson 225 hp outboard...recently the reed valve went bad, I replaced it and decided to change head gaskets, while doing so, I noticed that the reed caused damage in the top piston and now I need to replace the piston. In the manual it mentions using a tapper pin removal tool to remove the crankshaft cover plate. Is anyone familiar with this ?

Yeah, that taper pin tool that they show is kind of a joke.
There is no place to pry on the pin with that tool...

I clamp a vise grip on the pin REAL HARD. Then I put a large screw driver between the vise grip and block, prying as I gently rotate the vise grip.

It prys the pin out while rotating, and generally comes right out.

I don't drive the pin out because I am afraid of mushrooming the tapered end.

If you screw it up, they are real cheap. P/N 331095, $3.50.
