HELP with Merc 25!

Last Fall, my friend hit a rock with his prop and twisted the prop shaft and bent it a bit. Everything still worked (FNR) and the lower unit did not get cracked or develope a leak. We got a new shaft and seal kit and when I put everything together, on the bench it seems to be stuck in Forward gear. The SN is OC 151547 and it's the type of motor that shifts from the tiller handle. I think the motor is a 95'.

Any tips??

Did you not try to turn the drive shaft before assembling?

Yes, everything was fine. When I have everything together though, it seems to be stuck in forward.

The vertical movement of the shift rod can be very stiff. You may need to put a bit more force into moving it.

Jeeze, I tried moving it down pretty hard. Maybe the driveshaft needs to be spinning for it to shift?

Gosh, do I ever feel like a Moron:redface:. I had everything together correct, EXCEPT I left out the little 2" rod that fits into the midle of the prop shaft that controls the drive gear engagement. Well, lesson learnt I suppose!!:p
